Joslin Fernandez Blog Post #2 After watching my classmate's presentation about James Baldwin, I learned that he was much more than just a writer. Before the presentation, I had heard his name but did not know much about his life or why he was considered a changemaker. The slides explained how he used his books, essays, and speeches to speak out against racism and inequality during the Civil Rights Movement. I thought it was interesting that he believed people needed to face difficult truths if they wanted society to improve. One thing that stood out to me from the presentation was how much courage James Baldwin had. My classmate talked about the challenges he faced growing up and how he experienced discrimination because of both his race and his personal identity. Even though many people disagreed with him, he continued to share his opinions and fight for equality. That made me realize that being a changemaker is not always about holding political office. Sometimes it is about havi...

I found this idea interesting because there may be some opportunities for some group members to talk about people who we have probably never heard about like James Baldwin or Aaron Burr.     Starting with group one’s presentation, they chose to work on the 1700s to 1800s of Changemakers in the United S...

Hello there! Today I will be talking about how our presentation day went! We first divided ourselves into the same 3 groups as last time and we each were assigned different eras and had to choose an important change makers from that time line that we were interested in. Starting with group 1 who were assigned years 1776-1830s. They said between 1776 and the 1830s, America was a nation in motion. The American Revolution had marked a dramatic break from the British rule. My peer Zebadiah Mckenzie was able to explain and show some examples of the important things that’s happened through those years. For example 1776( Declaration of Independence), 1787 ( Constitution signed), 1789 ( Washington’s presidency), 1791 ( Bill of Rights/ National Bank), 1803 ( Louisiana Purchase), 1820 ( Missouri Compromise), 1830s ( Trail of Tears/ Reform Movements). After that they each started presenting their changemakers. Dylan Rodriguez takes about Thomas Jefferson and how she helped shape American dem...

In my Introduction to Communication course, we had an assignment to do a series of group presentations on various changemakers and how they impacted society. All groups had researched influential persons and presented information about their lives, achievements and contribution. The presentation wasn’t as stressful as the last one because we had about two weeks to prepare for it. Everyone had more time to research their topics, work on their slides, and rehearse their presentation. I enjoyed all three presentations because they were informative, visually appealing and helped me learn about people I didn’t know much about before. I also liked the way they linked her achievements to conversations about inclusion and social justice today. One thing I really liked was that each presentation had at least one short video about the changemakers being presented. The videos helped me picture the people we were learning about and provided me with more context that made the information easier to ...

Yohana Perez This presentation was separated into three groups with similar topics on communication. The topics being intercultural communication, communicating in groups, group leadership and problem solving. It was an opportunity to get to learn and discuss with my new classmates significant information on communication. I felt that this was a moment of growth not just for me but also for my classmates that alongside me also enjoyed the presentations. The whole process was well organized and I felt guided through the whole process. I felt the amount of people working in each group was perfectly divided for the slides. The amount of information we were all provided was efficient enough to properly learn the subject and teach the rest of the class about that subject. It was easy to project what we learned into the slides with enough time to complete them. The book also presented the students just enough information to work on well informed slides. All the presentations we prese...

Communication is one of the most important skills in both academic and real-life settings. Understanding how we interact with others, especially in groups, helps us become better teammates, leaders, and problem-solvers. Chapters 3, 9, and 10 focus on key areas of communication: the foundations of how we understand ourselves and others, how groups function, and how decisions are made effectively within those groups.      At the core of communication is how people perceive themselves and others. Our self-concept is the mental image we have of who we are, and it develops through interactions with others. The way people respond to us shapes how we see our abilities, personality, and value. This means communication is not just about talking—it actively influences identity.      Perception also plays a major role in communication. We do not interpret messages objectively; instead, we filter them through our experiences, beliefs, and emo...

Blog Post # 1 Jose Herrera

Jose Herrera  The presentation about intercultural communication was interesting and honestly one of the most useful presentations I saw because it talks about situations that happen every day in real life. I enjoyed how the presentation explained culture not only as traditions or language but also as the shared values, beliefs, and norms that guide people’s behavior. It made the topic feel deeper and more meaningful because it showed how communication and culture are always intertwined. I also liked how the presentation explained that culture is transmitted and changed through communication, since the way people speak, and interact can perform a cultural exchange with others around them over time. What I found the most interesting was the explanation of dominant cultures and co-cultures. The examples about race, ethnicity, religion, age, language, and socioeconomic status helped me understand how people can belong to many different cultural groups at the same time. The idea of...
