Blog Post #1 Yohana Perez

Yohana Perez This presentation was separated into three groups with similar topics on communication. The topics being intercultural communication, communicating in groups, group leadership and problem solving. It was an opportunity to get to learn and discuss with my new classmates significant information on communication. I felt that this was a moment of growth not just for me but also for my classmates that alongside me also enjoyed the presentations. The whole process was well organized and I felt guided through the whole process. I felt the amount of people working in each group was perfectly divided for the slides. The amount of information we were all provided was efficient enough to properly learn the subject and teach the rest of the class about that subject. It was easy to project what we learned into the slides with enough time to complete them. The book also presented the students just enough information to work on well informed slides. All the presentations we prese...

Communication is one of the most important skills in both academic and real-life settings. Understanding how we interact with others, especially in groups, helps us become better teammates, leaders, and problem-solvers. Chapters 3, 9, and 10 focus on key areas of communication: the foundations of how we understand ourselves and others, how groups function, and how decisions are made effectively within those groups.      At the core of communication is how people perceive themselves and others. Our self-concept is the mental image we have of who we are, and it develops through interactions with others. The way people respond to us shapes how we see our abilities, personality, and value. This means communication is not just about talking—it actively influences identity.      Perception also plays a major role in communication. We do not interpret messages objectively; instead, we filter them through our experiences, beliefs, and emo...

Blog Post # 1 Jose Herrera

Jose Herrera  The presentation about intercultural communication was interesting and honestly one of the most useful presentations I saw because it talks about situations that happen every day in real life. I enjoyed how the presentation explained culture not only as traditions or language but also as the shared values, beliefs, and norms that guide people’s behavior. It made the topic feel deeper and more meaningful because it showed how communication and culture are always intertwined. I also liked how the presentation explained that culture is transmitted and changed through communication, since the way people speak, and interact can perform a cultural exchange with others around them over time. What I found the most interesting was the explanation of dominant cultures and co-cultures. The examples about race, ethnicity, religion, age, language, and socioeconomic status helped me understand how people can belong to many different cultural groups at the same time. The idea of...

In my Introduction to Communication class we were assigned group presentations based on different chapters from our textbook. The groups were then to present and explain the key concepts of communication to the class in an easy way to understand. In the end, I really enjoyed all three presentations including my own groups presentation. I liked that each group had a slide with simple designs and straightforward information to follow. There was quite a lot of stuff in some chapters but everyone did a good job of splitting the work and of explaining the topics clearly. And I enjoyed learning new things from every presentation and not just reading from the text book. The class was more interesting and engaging. I was able to see different presentation styles and listen to different people explain concepts. The first group presented on Chapter 3: Culture and Communication. In their presentation they touched on a number of important topics including race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, ...

Since the professor also discussed how the presentation for each group should look like the members worked together to make it look nice and unified, I was also viewing to see if the presentations looked like a single person made it. Starting with group one, they were given chapter 3 on Intercultural Communication, which is an important chapter that matters ...

Joslin Fernandez SPC1017 8:00 Chapter 9 is the chapter where I found the most interesting. Where communicating in groups is honestly one of the easier methods for me to understand because it talked about situations people deal with all the time. Everyone works in groups at some point, whether it’s in school, sports, work, or even with friends. I liked this chapter because it felt more realistic and connected to everyday life compared to some other chapters that feel more confusing or overly academic. One part of the topics that stood out to me was 9-2 Characteristics of Healthy Groups. I thought this topic was interesting because it explained what makes a group actually work well together. I’ve been in good groups before where everyone helped out and communicated, but I’ve also been in bad groups where nobody wanted to do the work or people argued the whole time. Reading this section made me realize why some groups are successful and others are stressful to be in. The chapter explained...

Blog post #1- Maria Murillo

Hello there! Today I will talk about the presentation we had the other day, where we presented chapters 3, 9, and 10.  Starting with group 1, they all presented chapter 1 focused on intercultural communication, which refers to the interaction that occurs between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is challenging. They successfully presented their objectives, where they first defined culture and the role of communication in it. I thought it was very nice and interesting to see some of the examples, like the one about Actress Halle Berry, that talks about how she grew up in an all-black neighborhood and all the kids thought she was better than them, just because of her light skin  and straight hair. Then she moved to an all-white neighborhood and that was clearly a culture shock. During the presentation my peers touched and discussed topics like race, ethnicity, sex and gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, age/gen...
